Woodlands Primary School is dedicated to providing an education for children with special needs, ranging from Autism to severe Cerebral Palsy. The staff work tirelessly every day to provide a nurturing environment for their students, helping them get the experiences that every child deserves. They had a brief that required the design of a new, multi-sensory playground for the school.
This was a year long project, requiring in depth research and analysis into the different disabilities that affect the children and how they will be able to interact with the space. For the more active children there are three general play areas: a pirate themed area to encourage imaginative play, a sloped area for more exercise and slides and a common area with specially designed roundabouts, swings and climbing frame. For the less able children there is a water ineraction area and a sensory garden to stimulate smells, sound and sight rather than movement.
